About the Piece
Tiger and Lion is inspired by a wonderful poster I had when I was growing up (artist unknown). In this new version, I designed the print to be more of a circus poster and created a dress-wearing, boots-sporting cat -- whom I call Tiger -- to hold up the hoop. Tiger and Lion was created at Penland School of Craft in summer 2019 through a reduction printing process and printed on a Vandercook Press. In reduction printing, an artist prints all colors from the same block, carving away different layers after each pass of color. In this case, I printed three colors (yellow, orange, and pinky red) on one block; transferred the image onto a second block; carved away most of the linoleum and printed that second block in blue; and, finally, printed the original block in black, using a total of five colors on two different blocks.
Technique / Materials: Tiger and Lion is an original hand-carved reduction linocut print. Printed on Mohawk 100lb cover paper. Limited edition of 30.
Size: The image is 12” x 17 1/2” and the paper is 13” x 18 3/4”
