I love every step of the printmaking process: coming up with a starting image, transferring that image to linoleum; figuring out what to carve and how to do it; carving; inking; and printing. I particularly like mark making and doodling, the physical act of carving, and the push and pull between wanting to control the processes and learning to accept — and sometimes revel in — the unpredictable nature of printmaking.

Background:
Originally from New England, I’ve lived in San Francisco, my adopted home, for more than 30 years.
I don’t have any formal arts training – in school and career, I’ve been drawn to words and books and social justice endeavors – but my mom was an artist, mostly a sculptor, and I grew up around a lot of art. I’ve been making prints since about 2013, often in Katie Gilmartin’s Chrysalis Studio in San Francisco, where we print on a Griffin etching press and use oil-based inks. Katie has been my teacher, mentor, and cheerleader for years, and I continue to learn from her. I’m also grateful to Laura Baisden for teaching me about reduction printing — and the beauty of the Vandercook Press -- during summer 2019 at Penland School of Craft.
