About the Piece
I was thinking about fish and about how so many fish names include nouns that reference other objects or animals (clownfish, angelfish, catfish, parrotfish), and I wondered how the fish were linked to the nouns at the front of their names. I spent a long time looking through fish websites and trying to make connections between the funnily-named fish and their mammalian (or other) counterparts. I decided to focus on three distinct fish – the zebrafish, the lionfish, and a leopard shark – and create a print that was a kind of visual puzzle. Each fish and mammal is carved separately so when I print, I aim to get dark, saturated black images on all six of the plates..
Technique / Materials: Fish/Mammal Face Off is a black and white linocut print made up of six hand-carved blocks and printed with oil-based ink. It is printed on acid-free cotton printmaking paper, with deckled edges. This is an open edition print.
Size: The image is 12.5” x 19” and the paper is 15” x 22.5”
